Diamond Carat
Unlocking the Magic of Carat Weight in Diamonds
What is a Diamond Carat?
A diamond carat (ct) is a unit of measurement used to determine the size and weight of a diamond. One carat is equivalent to 200 milligrams or 0.007 ounces. Carat weight is one of the "Four Cs" used to assess the quality and value of a diamond, with the other three being cut, colour, and clarity. The carat weight of a diamond significantly influences its price, with larger diamonds generally being more valuable due to their rarity. However, it's important to consider carat weight alongside the other factors to ensure you're getting the right balance of size, sparkle, and overall quality in a diamond.
How is Diamond size affected by Carat Weight?
Carat weight directly affects the size of a diamond. In simple terms, the higher the carat weight, the larger the diamond. Carat weight is a measure of a diamond's size and mass. It's important to note that carat weight is not the only factor influencing a diamond's size, as the overall dimensions, shape, and cut quality also play a role. However, for a given shape and cut, a diamond with a higher carat weight will be physically larger and have a greater visual presence.
How does Carat Weight affect Diamond’s price?
The relationship between carat weight and price isn't linear; it's exponential. This means that as a diamond's carat weight increases, its price increases disproportionately. In basic terms, the larger the diamond, the less common it is, which contributes to its higher price
Magic Numbers of Carats explained
Magic Numbers are the points where diamond prices can jump dramatically. The magic numbers in a diamond carat weight are usually found in 0.25ct increments: 0.50ct, 0.75ct, 1ct, 1.25ct, 1.50ct, 1.75ct, 2ct. Therefore, a 0.75ct diamond will be significantly cheaper in price than a 1ct diamond.
Describing TCW in relation to Diamonds
Total Carat Weight (which shortness to TWC) is the combined weight of all diamonds or other gems that are present in a piece of jewellery. For example, the diamond eternity ring’s total carat weight would include all of the diamonds weights that are present on the ring.
